Coolief Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA)
Coolief RFA is a minimally invasive procedure approved by FDA that utilizes the technology of radiofrequency to minimize or eliminate chronic knee, shoulder, spineand hip pain.
Procedure
Small nerves that transmit pain sensations from the diseased or degenerated joint is heated, through the water-cooled radiofrequency device. This ensures that the nerves will be unable to transmit the pain sensations from within the
problem joint to the brain. The patient doesn't lose any sensation to the skin round the joint. Typically, the procedure is performed under fluoroscopic and ultrasound guidance for improved success and to minimise side effects.
Who are the ideal candidates for Coolief Radio frequency Ablation?
The ideal patients for Coolief RFA are:
- People with mild to moderate degenerated and arthriticjoints (knee, hip, shoulder, small facet joints of spine and sacro-iliac joints) who are NOT ready for joint replacement surgery.
- Patients who are unfit to have a surgery: This group includes patients who have significant risk factors such as uncontrolled hypertension, diabetes, heart problems and end stage kidney disease. These patients are at risk of serious
complications including death from surgery.
- Patients who have severe joint pain but who want pain relief and delay surgery while they make up their mind.
- Patients who are still in pain even after surgery. About 1 in 5 patients continue to have pain even after surgery due to sensitized nerves.
- Elderly patients who are suffering from chronic pain and who are dependent on pain medication or over-the-counter treatments for pain relief. Although pain medication have a definit role in relieving pain,patients may become dependent
on them and may also suffer from serious side effects such as gastric ulcers, kidney dysfunction and also heart attacks.
