BMAC IS NOT STEM CELL THERAPY

What does BMAC stand for?

BMAC stands for Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate

What is bone marrow?

Bone marrow is the spongy tissue which fills the inside of the bones. There are 2 types of bone marrow: red and yellow. Red marrow contains primitive (haemopoetic) stem cells which can develop into many types of blood cells. Yellow marrow stores fat. As we age the red marrow is replaced by yellow marrow and by adulthood red marrow is found only in a few bones such as pelvis, skull, sternum, femur, vertebrae. The yellow marrow contains mesenchymal stem cells which can develop into bone, cartilage, fat and muscle.

What is BMAC?

Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) is a component of your bone marrow that contains growth factors which have been shown to promote bone and soft tissue healing as well as reduce symptoms of pain related to injuries, tendinitis and arthritis. The concentration of stem cells is very low for it to be used as stem cell therapy and regeneration. It is mainly used to accelerate wound healing

How is BMAC harvested?

Bone marrow can be harvested from several bones within your body and is relatively easy to access. Bone marrow is aspirated through a small needle puncture in the pelvic bone and placed in a special processing unit, which will concentrate the platelets and growth factors. The concentrate is collected into a sterile syringe and injected into the targeted body area being treated.

What are the side effects of BMAC?

Patients may experience soreness at the bone marrow collection site and treatment site for a few days following the procedure.

What are the risks?

The risks of stem cell therapy are extremely low but as with any procedure, there are possible risks and complications. Although very unlikely, any injection can potentially cause bleeding, increased pain, infection or nerve damage. Because your own cells are being utilized, there is no risk of tissue rejection of the cells.

What precautions should be taken BEFORE the injection?

  • Avoid blood thinners like aspirin, clopidogrel for a week prior to an injection.
  • Avoid anti-inflammatory pain killers for a week prior to an injection.

What precautions should be taken AFTER the injection?

  • Do not take any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain killers for 1 month after the injection.
  • No excess activity for 2 weeks
  • Light exercise may be reintroduced to daily routine after 2 weeks.
  • Moderate to strenuous exercise is not recommended until 6 weeks after the injection. Vigorous movement before this time will negate healing of the treated site.

Will the injection start to work immediately?

No. Most patients with more severe problems see effects after 6 weeks, as the improvement is gradual with continued treatments.
