Pre-procedure Instructions

Procedure

You have been recommended for a:

  • Cervical / Thoracic / Lumbar / Caudal Epidural Steroid Injection
  • Sacroiliac Joint Injection
  • Cervical / Thoracic / Lumbar Medial Branch Block
  • Cervical / Thoracic / Lumbar Medical Branch Rhizotomy / Neurotomy
  • Right / Left Intercostal Nerve Block
  • Stellate Ganglion Block
  • Bilateral Major Joint Injection
  • Transforaminal Nerve Block
  • Ganglion blocks
  • Prolotherapy
  • Joint injections

Instructions
  • For ALL Procedures/Injections you must STOP BLOOD THINNERS (If approved by prescribing physician):
    • You must stop Plavix (Clopidogrel) 7 days prior to procedure
    • You must stop Ticlopidine 14 days prior to Procedure
    • You must stop Coumadin/Warfarin, Cilostazol, Prasugrel, Eliquis or Xarelto 5 days prior to procedure
    • If on Coumadin/Warfarin, INR must be checked the morning of your procedure
    • You must stop any Fish Oil Supplement 14 days prior to procedure
  • Do not eat 6 hours prior to procedure.
  • Do not drink 4 hours prior to procedure.
  • DIABETICS: Morning procedure-do not take oral diabetic medication or insulin. Afternoon proceduremay take morning oral diabetic medications or insulin with early morning meal.
  • If you are getting sedation, YOU MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A RESPONSIBLE ADULT that can remain throughout your stay in the center.
  • YOU MAY TAKE ALL OTHER MEDICATIONS (including your pain medications the morning of your procedure WITH SMALL SIPS OF WATER.
  • You cannot be on Antibiotics 10 days prior to the procedure.
  • You cannot not have had a vaccination/immunization such as Flu, Shingles, MMR for 4 weeks prior to your procedure.
  • If you have a fever the day of your procedure you must reschedule.
  • Due to the size our waiting room, only one person is allowed to come with you to your procedure.
  • The individual must be over 12 years of age.
  • If you are receiving sedation, you must have an adult to drive you home.

Discharge Instructions

For IV sedation

If you have IV sedation with your procedure you may experience light-headedness, dizziness, sleepiness, blurred vision, short-term memory loss, poor judgment and unsteadiness.

DO NOT:

  • Drive / make personal decisions that require you to sign legal documents for the next 24 HRS
  • Drink alcoholic beverages / perform heavy lifting; operate heavy machinery for the next 24 HRS
  • Stay alone for the next 24 HRS
  • Take more pain medication than prescribed

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS FROM YOUR PROCEDURE MAY INCLUDE:

  • IV sedation medication may add to the effects of other medicines such as; Anti-depressants, anti-anxiety, narcotics, anti-emetics, muscle relaxants, and antiseizure medicine
  • Temporary numbness / tingling / weakness / worsening pain
  • Blood pressure problems / urinary retention / difficulty walking
  • These symptoms should subside within 24-48 hours after your procedure

For DIABETIC patients

  • You may experience increases in your blood sugars for up to 7 days after your procedure. This is expected- treat accordingly.
  • Check your sugar several times a day to prevent further problems
    • You may resume your normal diet and all other medications immediately. Drink plenty of fluids.
    • You may also resume your normal activity the DAY AFTER your procedure. No specific activity restrictions are placed after your procedure unless you have specifically been advised.
    • You may begin taking ibuprofen/Motrin 800mg every 8 hours for 5 days unless allergic or intolerant
    • Upon arrival at home, place an ice pack on procedure site for 20 minutes, then off for 1 hour.
    • Continue for the next 5 days or as much as possible.

For problems

If you have symptoms like fever, bleeding, persistent headache or continued numbness after 48 hours please contact at (8096235305) or go to the nearest hospital.
